RAFA HAPPY TO CONCENTRATE ON FOOTBALL

Rafa Benitez is looking forward to concentrating on football after a hectic transfer window.
The Anfield boss added six names to his first-team squad during the summer, including the deadline day capture of Albert Riera.

That deal saw Steve Finnan go the other way to Espanyol, while Andriy Voronin left for a year on loan at Hertha Berlin.

Benitez believes the departures will benefit both players, and the Spaniard is now looking forward to an extended period focusing solely on football.

"It's important because we can now concentrate on football and preparing the team," he told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"Voronin needed to play, and with the competition we have got up front it was going to be difficult for him. Hertha Berlin are a big team, so it was a good move for him.

"Finnan was involved in the Albert Riera deal, so it was a good option for us.

"We signed Philipp Degen and have also got Alvaro Arbeloa.

"But Finnan has been a good servant to the club. He is a consistent player – that's important in any position, but especially full-back."

RIERA: ANFIELD WAS MY DREAM DESTINATION

Albert Riera has today spoken for the first time about his dream move from Espanyol.

The 26-year-old was Liverpool's main piece of business on transfer deadline day after signing a four-year deal.

Rafa Benitez later revealed that several Barclays Premier League clubs were interested in the five-times Spain international.

But after claiming the number 11 shirt at Anfield, Riera insisted Merseyside was the only place he wanted to be.

"As soon as I knew they were interested in me I knew there was only one club that I wanted to sign for and thankfully it has now happened," said the winger.

"I know I will have to work very hard to get into the team because there are a lot of good players here but that is a challenge I am looking forward to.

"It feels really good to be a Liverpool player and I am really happy to be at this club.

"I am looking forward to working with the manager and the players."

RESERVES IN PROFILE: GARY MACKAY-STEVEN

As Gary Ablett's reserves prepare to start their title defence in Middlesbrough this evening, Liverpoolfc.tv brings you the first in a brand new series putting the spotlight on the club's young guns.
Today we're looking at Scottish winger Gary Mackay-Steven, who rose through the ranks at Ross County before impressing Anfield scouts while playing for Scotland in the European Under-17 Championships.

The left-sider was quickly offered a place at the Academy, moving to Merseyside in the summer of 2007.

"When I knew Liverpool were interested, this was the only place I wanted to be," says Mackay-Steven. "I had options to go for trials at other clubs but after seeing the facilities here I didn't go.

"I obviously know about the tradition of Scottish players here and it's definitely something I want to emulate. Kenny Dalglish is one of the club's best ever players, so to follow in his footsteps wouldn't be bad!"

Within a year, the youngster was deemed good enough for Melwood, heading down to West Derby in July alongside midfielder Steven Irwin.

"I got a phone call as I was coming back from my holidays in Greece," says Mackay-Steven, who turned 18 on Sunday.

"A guy from the Academy phoned but he couldn't get through to me as I dropped my phone down the toilet! I ended up getting a message from my house parents.

"It is a big step up but I am relishing the opportunity. It's the place to be.

"I learn things every day and it's going well so far.

"To start with, when you are eating breakfast and they [the first team] are there, you do get starstruck but you get used to it. They are friendly, normal guys."

NEW BOY RIERA IN TEN FACTS

He's a Spain international who has enjoyed an eye-catching spell with Espanyol - but what else do you know about our new left winger?
Liverpoolfc.tv endeavours to bring you up to speed with a list of 10 things you probably didn't know about Albert Riera.

Albert Riera

1. Riera is known as Spain's answer to Middlesbrough's Stewart Downing but when among friends he goes by the nickname of 'Flossy'.

2. Albert was born on April 15, 1982 and shares his birthday with actress Emma Watson and former Blue Peter presenter Katy Hill.

3. Riera can boast to have matched new teammate Steven Gerrard's achievement of scoring in a UEFA Cup final. However, unlike Stevie, it would prove to be a bitter-sweet occasion for the winger, as Espanyol eventually succumbed to a penalty shoot-out defeat in the 2007 final against Sevilla. The match had ended 2-2 after extra-time.

4. Albert can already claim to have some Barclays Premier League experience having made 15 appearances for Manchester City after spending some of the 2005-06 season on loan at the club.

5. He made his Blues debut in a memorable 3-1 win at home to local rivals Manchester United on January 14, 2006. A similar result would be most welcome if he makes his Reds bow against the Red Devils on September 13.

6. Riera managed just one goal under City boss at the time Stuart Pearce, when he opened the scoring in a 3-0 win at home to Newcastle on February 1, 2006.

7. Guillem Balague believes the winger will make the most of his second spell in the Premier League after claiming City did not take full advantage of the 26-year-old's strengths. "He was not given the opportunity to play in his natural, attacking, position at City," he wrote on his website. "He spent his time there being used as a wing back: his natural position is a winger in a 4-2-3-1 formation."

8. Albert hails from the island of Mallorca and comes from a town called Manacor, which, incidentally, is the same place where tennis star Rafael Nadal was born.

9. Riera has already sampled the famous Anfield atmosphere after playing 77 minutes of City's 1-0 defeat away to Liverpool in the 2005-06 campaign. Harry Kewell was the Reds' goalscorer that day while Joey Barton was sent off for the visitors.

10. Albert scored his one and only international goal in Spain's 3-1 win away to Denmark in a European Championship qualifier on October 13, 2007. He has five caps for his country to date.

REDS CONFIRM TORRES INJURY

Liverpool have today confirmed Fernando Torres suffered a hamstring tear during the Reds' goalless draw at Aston Villa on Sunday.
The Liverpool striker limped off during the first half of the match and has been forced to withdraw from the Spanish squad for their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Bosnia and Armenia.

"A scan this afternoon has confirmed a hamstring tear in Fernando's right leg. He is expected to be out for between two and three weeks," said a club spokesman.

TORRES INJURED IN VILLA STALEMATE

Fernando Torres limped off injured as Liverpool's hopes of moving clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League were dashed following a goalless draw at Villa Park.

The Spaniard pulled up holding his hamstring on the half hour mark as the Reds saw their chances of securing three wins in their opening three games for the first time since 1994-95 come to an end.

Rafael Benitez's side shaded what was a full-blooded encounter between two even sides but despite creating the majority of the chances they could not find that elusive match-winning goal.

It means Liverpool failed to take advantage of Chelsea's home draw with Spurs earlier in the afternoon and remain in second-place behind Luiz Felipe Scolari's side on goal difference.

Ahead of the clash the Villa faithful greeted the Reds with the expected crescendo of boos but despite the white-hot reception it was Liverpool who made the more assured start with the returning Javier Mascherano helping to bolster the visitors' midfield in the absence of Steven Gerrard.

torresvilla1However, Rafael Benitez's side lacked the cutting edge to go with their early possession and it was the hosts who asked most of the questions in an even first period, with Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew in particular, a constant menace to stand-in skipper Jamie Carragher and co.

To make matters worse the Reds were dealt a huge blow on 30 minutes when Torres pulled up after chasing a hopeful ball and had to be replaced by David Ngog, who came on to make his Premier League debut.

It summed up a disappointing first 45 for the Reds in which chances were at a premium with Dirk Kuyt's drilled effort into the side netting and Ngog's snap shot from the edge of the box the best we could muster.

In contrast Villa will have wondered how they didn't take a lead into the interval after Ashley Young cut the ball back for John Carew, but the big Norwegian saw his low attempt from eight yards brilliantly saved by the feet of Pepe Reina.

It was perhaps an unsurprising scoreline for the travelling Kop to discuss over their half-time cups of tea as Liverpool made it nine competitive games in a row in which they have failed to score in the first-half.

Last season the attacking duo of Gerrard and Torres were responsible for the vast majority of the Reds' goals and it seemed likely Rafael Benitez's side's profligacy would continue without them.

And so it would prove, although the eleven men on show did their best to take up the baton with Ngog inches away from turning a low centre into the net while Alonso saw his side-footed shot from the edge of the box deflect just over the bar after great play by Robbie Keane.

The Irishman's link up play proved to be a feature of Liverpool's attacking bursts although he should have done better on 72 minutes when he screwed his shot wide of Brad Friedel's far post after Mascherano's ball had sent him clear.

There was a definite improvement in the away side's display but for all their efforts Villa remained stubbornly resistant and the Reds will now have to wait until the home clash with Manchester United in a fortnight's time to try and score their 400th goal under boss Rafael Benitez.
